New from KraftMaid

Mix and Match
The new collections from KraftMaid

To create an open space in the home and a place for family and friends to gather, homeowners are knocking down the walls between the kitchen, living room, and dining room to create one great room.

This spacious setting has inspired everyone from designers and customers to mix and match furniture finishes, textures, and styles within one space. Our designers at KraftMaid have become so inspired by this trend that we’ve created two new collections of finishes: Vintage and Burnished.

Vintage and burnished finishes start life the same way. In both cases, the unfinished doors are given unique and random impression marks, through distressing and over-sanding.

For vintage finishes, several coats of stain saturate the wood to produce a rich, beautiful color. These finishes are semi-opaque, meaning that some of the natural beauty of the wood shows through the stain. As a final step, the edges of doors and drawer fronts are over-sanded again to let the natural beauty of the wood show.

Burnished finishes require a darkening stain to be expertly applied to the corners and raised edges of the doors and drawer fronts, creating a burnished effect. A base stain is then added to the rest of the door and hand-wiped, imbuing the wood with warmth and highlight the natural beauty inherent in the wood.

The finishes in each collection not only mix well within themselves (Vintage with Vintage; Burnished with Burnished) but Vintage and Burnished finishes can also be combined for a sophisticated look in the home. Better still, both collections coordinate beautifully with a majority of our existing finishes.  We would like to share some of our favorite finish combinations that you can enjoy for many years to come.

How to Mix and Match Finishes:

• Color Trend #1: Try Cinnamon on Cherry with Willow on Maple for kitchen cabinet colors or bathroom colors. Since Red and Green are opposite on the color wheel, they are complementary colors. Try both on Putnam for a Transitional/Soft Contemporary design.

• Color Trend #2: Vintage Biscotti and Burnished Ginger on either Maple or Cherry together create a warm, classic style, which could be considered Cottage or Shabby Chic.

• Color Trend #3: Vintage Canvas and Burnished Autumn Blush on Cherry display traditional with a twist by combining a rich and warm mid-value stain with a cool but soft, white finish. Try a traditional door style such as Marquette with contemporary hardware like the Satin Nickel Tapered Bow Pull to complement the popular array of stainless appliances.

• Color Trend #4: Try Vintage Willow on Cherry and Burnished Ginger on Cherry as your main kitchen colors or bathroom colors. The earthern tones set the stage and welcome splashes of color throughout oher design elements.

• Color Trend #5:  Warm cherry wood tones rise from a classic Dove White painted finish to harmoniously join Burnished Ginger for a timeless look. This is a trend that is always in style.

• Color Trend #6: Mixing a Vintage Willow into a rich, full-bodied run of Chocolate on Cherry adds a light playfulness while maintaining the overal aesthetic.

• Color Trend #7: Vintage Onyx on Cherry, Vintage Canvas on Cherry and Burnished Cabernet create a beautiful trio for kitchen cabinet and bathroom colors. Cabinet interiors are a great place to put accent color! Try field installing a contrasting skin or V-Groove Paneling in the back of a wall cabinet, along with glass doors for a pop of color and to help tie in each of the mixed colors. Remember with the addition of an interior back panel, custom cut shelves may be necessary.

• Color Trend #8: Praline on Durango Birch with Vintage Onyx accents is a sophisticated way to design with a rustic wood species. You can’t go wrong by adding a touch of black into a design.

• Color Trend #9: For a new twist on an old favorite, Peppercorn on Oak paired with our new Willow on Maple creates a stunning contrast of light and dark, as well as smooth and textured.

Personalize Your Space:  Mix and Match Decorative Enhancements

With the introduction of five new decorative enhancement collections, you can mix and match moldings to create a style that is perfectly unique to your home.   Each collection—Timeless, Estate, Modern, Casual and Classic—portrays a unique style of its own. However, some elements such as Federal Molding, Federal Leg, and Decorative Leg are shared among the collections for ease of mixing and matching collections in one space.  All five collections were specifically designed to coordinate, so you can’t go wrong when adding the finishing touches.  The following are just a few ideas from the designers at KraftMaid.

The Rosette Corbel and the Cove Corbel from existing decorative enhancements both provide simple, yet sophisticated elements when mixed with the new collections.  The rosette corbel is shown here with the Chadwick and Astoria door styles, Center Bead Edge and Cover Light Rail.

Combine the Federal Molding, which crosses Timeless, Estate, and Modern collections, with the new Chadwick and Astoria door styles, that features a beaded detail on the door frame.  Add the Center Bead Edge, as shown here, on the starter molding and wall column to coordinate the details and easily finish the design.  Further enhance the detail with the Timeless Collection ornament and glass, which is available in Camed, Bronze or Nickel finish or Mullion style.
