Season 4

Episode 3The Hawkins Family

On Friday April 7, 2006 a massive F-3 tornado barreled its way through Hendersonville, Tennessee and headed directly for the Hawkins family home. As her home was ripped off its foundation, Amy Hawkins sheltered her boys in the basement and lay on top of them. But when bricks, debris and concrete fell, they landed directly on Amy. Amy’s vertebrae & ribs were crushed, her lungs were punctured, and she sustained a serious head injury.

Left paralyzed by the falling bricks from her own house, Amy is on a slow road to recovery in an Atlanta hospital for her spinal chord injuries. Despite her condition, the entire Hawkins family is happy that she is alive and that her heroic actions saved the lives of her precious boys! In this episode of ’’Extreme Makeover: Home Edition’’ a home that took seconds for a tornado to destroy will be rebuilt to keep this family together for a lifetime!

The Hawkins’ new kitchen, designed to accommodate Amy’s wheelchair, was completed with KraftMaid custom cabinetry. A sunny Amber Glaze was used to finish the new maple cabinets, which included the layered look of Barnstead glass inserts and Brushed Pewter knobs and pulls.

The family’s utility room features the rustic look of Hickory wood, with all its unique knots and character markings. The warm Cognac finish color completes the look with Brushed Pewter hardware accenting the cabinetry. The Hawkins’ shared bathroom was designed using the Venicia line of KraftMaid cabinetry, with its streamlined Euro-style appearance. The Coressa door style was chosen, a sleek, flat profile cabinet finished in the calming blue Oceana Gloss and accented with Aluminum Round Bar pulls.
