Extreme Makeover: Home Edition
It all began with a television producer’s phone call asking KraftMaid to help a deserving family in need of a fresh start. Seasons later, we are proud to remain the exclusive cabinetry provider of ABC’s award-winning program, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.
Episode 4The Bliven Family
In this episode the Extreme team travels to North Dakota to help a family raising a son with cerebral palsy. Unfortunately, the modest house that Bill and Michelle Bliven bought almost 20 years ago in which to raise their children is no longer a safe haven for their growing son. His wheelchair is too large to fit through the hallways and even some doorways in the home. This means he must be carried from room to room. After suffering 2 heart attacks last year, Bill is physically unable to lift his son any longer, which leaves the entire burden on Michelle.
The Bliven Family has made many sacrifices. Michelle and Bill haven’t slept in the same room for years. Michelle has to sleep on a cot in Aaron’s room in order to turn him periodically throughout the night to prevent bedsores. The insurmountable bills for treatment, medication, equipment and more have made it difficult for them to make the necessary changes that would make life easier for them.
In the Bliven’s new home, both the kitchen and laundry room were redesigned using KraftMaid custom cabinetry. In the kitchen, the Capri style cabinets were chosen from KraftMaid’s contemporary Venicia collection. Finished in Tiber Cherry Satin, the sleek new cabinet doors were accented by rear-mounted glass doors using Satina, a frosted, satin glass insert. Aluminum Round Bar pulls completed the design of the Bliven’s updated kitchen. The same hardware was used in the laundry room, which was outfitted with solid, raised maple cabinetry in Cashmere Glaze, a warm honey color that transforms this utility area into a welcome new space.
