Extreme Makeover: Home Edition

It all began with a television producer’s phone call asking KraftMaid to help a deserving family in need of a fresh start. Seasons later, we are proud to remain the exclusive cabinetry provider of ABC’s award-winning program, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

Season 5

Episode 1The Akana Family

Eleven years ago Momi was a single mom on welfare when she started Keiki O Ka Aina (KOKA) Family Learning Centers, a non-profit organization that supports the native Hawaiian community by offering culturally educational programs for free to those who would not normally be able to afford them elsewhere.

Over the years Momi Akana and her kids tried to make improvements to their home themselves but never had the money or expertise to finish anything properly. Then, in 2004, a major flood washed away half of their foundation, leaving only a couple of pillars to support their home. Momi now worries that it is only a matter of time before the rest of their home falls into the river.

To make matters worse, the property that KOKA moved into is in such poor condition with extensive termite damage, roofs that don’t match up with the walls, extreme flooding and leaking, poor electrical and virtually no security. Because KOKA is a non-profit there is no money to fix the damage done to the Akana’s home or to fix the structures that now house KOKA.

In this episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition the Extreme Team will travel to the beautiful island of Oahu and help transform the life of this very special woman and all the lives that she helps through KOKA.

Both KOKA and the Akana’s home were transformed with KraftMaid custom cabinetry installed in many rooms. At KOKA, both the kitchen and he conference room were made over with beautiful cherry wood cabinetry finished in the golden Honey Spice. Satin Pewter pulls were used in the kitchen, while Domed Resin knobs accented the conference room’s new cabinets.

The Akana’s new home was also remodeled using KraftMaid cabinetry, starting with the Venicia brand in the kitchen and laundry rooms. Venicia’s sleek, striking appeal can be seen in both rooms where cabinets from the Lustra Collection were chosen in Bianco Satin, a glossy white finish and highlighted by Satina glass inserts. The modern styling of these cabinets was accented by the cool tones of Aluminum and Brushed Pewter knobs and drawer pulls.

The family’s bathrooms were also given gleaming makeovers using KraftMaid’s Venicia line of cabinetry. The sleek black of Onyx Satin was used in a guest bathroom with aluminum Solid Cylinder drawer pulls completing the look. The Lustra Cabinetry Collection was chosen for Momi’s master bath as well, finished in the rich brown of Tygris Gloss and accented with Aluminum Whistle knobs.
