Extreme Makeover: Home Edition
It all began with a television producer’s phone call asking KraftMaid to help a deserving family in need of a fresh start. Seasons later, we are proud to remain the exclusive cabinetry provider of ABC’s award-winning program, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.
Episode 24The Silva Family
After marrying and having two sons of their own, Ken and Doreen Silva became foster parents for the first time. Within a few short years, they opened their home to over a dozen children, adopted three boys and still continue to foster others. Through foster care speaking engagements and public advocacy they inspired many families in their community to champion their cause and become foster parents as well.
This past September, the Silva’s were shocked to learn that their children tested high for levels of lead at a routine physical. Upon further investigating, their home was found to carry dangerous levels of lead throughout the home including the backyard and most interior and exterior surfaces of the house. After trying to remove the lead themselves, their children still tested at elevated levels and the Rhode Island Department of Health has threatened to remove their foster children from their care.
In this episode, the Extreme Team travels to Rhode Island to design a safe, new home for this deserving family that continues to expand and take care of children in the community.
The Silva’s new kitchen was designed using KraftMaid’s custom maple wood cabinetry, finished in Canvas, a creamy, off-white hue. Antiquity glass inserts reflect the dramatic door style, while Brushed Pewter knobs and pulls were chosen to complete the room.
The family’s new laundry room and mudroom were outfitted with maple cabinetry as well. The warm-toned Ginger Glaze finish was applied to the cabinets in both rooms as well as to the computer desk. Brushed Pewter hardware was selected to accent the doors and drawers.
