Extreme Makeover: Home Edition

After the birth of a second child with autism, Matthew and Blasia Drumm dedicated their lives to children with disabilities. Now they help manage special needs little leagues and, during the school year, Blasia works as a teacher’s aid at the Franklin Learning Center for Handicapped Children.

When purchasing their home, the Drumms were unaware that the home itself and the lot that it’s on were used as a dump site for trash and waste. Because of their financial hardships, they’ve not made any improvements to the home, which is heated by a single wood-burning stove. The Drumms hope to one day work full time from home to help other special needs families. With a vision of transforming this family’s junkyard home into a fresh dwelling where the Drumms can offer in-home respite care to other special needs children, the Extreme Makeover team travel to Pennsylvania to rebuild the house in seven days.

The Drumm family’s new home included custom cabinetry by KraftMaid in both the kitchen and laundry room. Birch wood was selected for the new kitchen cabinets, which were stained in Pewter with Graphite Glaze. The kitchen island was crafted from cherry wood and finished in the complementary Vintage Onyx. Weathered Iron Suitcase pulls and knobs accented the door and drawers while Antiquity glass inserts were chosen for the cabinets as well. In the laundry area, Cascade glass inserts were used in the design of the cherry wood cabinetry, which were stained in Peppercorn and completed with Brushed Pewter hardware.
