Extreme Makeover: Home Edition
It all began with a television producer’s phone call asking KraftMaid to help a deserving family in need of a fresh start. Seasons later, we are proud to remain the exclusive cabinetry provider of ABC’s award-winning program, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.
Episode 18The Ruiz Family
Twelve years ago Maria Ruiz and her family stopped construction on their home -- leaving it almost entirely unfinished -- and turned their efforts towards feeding poor families in Juarez, Mexico and helping their local community. Every day Maria and her husband, Jesus, travel across the border to bring food, clothing and supplies to thousands, completely free of charge. Maria and Jesus both work multiple jobs in order to support their family and their charitable work. Today their own home stands as it did in 1996, unfinished. In addition to exposed plywood floors and uncompleted dry wall, the actual house structure tilts in, and is caving in on itself. The home has no heat, suffers from water damage and cracks in the floors and walls. Moreover, because the food bank doesn’t have a kitchen or storage area, the Ruiz family use their living room to store and prepare food donations.
Thanks to this family’s giving spirit, thousands of starving people have been fed. Now the Extreme Makeover team travels to El Paso to finally finish the Ruiz home and provide them a storage facility and a truck so they can continue to help others.
The Ruiz’s new home and storage facility were equipped with KraftMaid cabinetry in both kitchens. The family kitchen was designed using birch wood stained in KraftMaid’s Antique Chocolate with Mocha Glaze. Yorkshire glass inserts accented the doors and Oil Rubbed Bronze pulls were applied to doors and drawers.
In the storage facility, the kitchen and pantry were designed with KraftMaid’s Venicia style cabinetry. Corressa cabinets finished in Chianti, a glossy red hue, were chosen for the kitchen. Stainless Steel hardware and Satina glass inserts complemented the sleek look of these cabinets from the Mirra collection. Capri cabinets from the Lustra collection were selected for the pantry. Venicia’s cool grey Steel Gloss stain was embellished with aluminum framed glass inserts and Stainless Steel Bar pulls.
