Extreme Makeover: Home Edition

It all began with a television producer’s phone call asking KraftMaid to help a deserving family in need of a fresh start. Seasons later, we are proud to remain the exclusive cabinetry provider of ABC’s award-winning program, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

Season 6

Episode 2The Akers Family

At birth, Greg and Ginger Akers’ children were presumably healthy. Unfortunately, as they matured, all three children were diagnosed with life threatening conditions. Christian was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease and both Brooke and Faith were diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy. With pending severe disabilities for the girls, suddenly, the Akers’ bi-level dream home became a major obstacle for their family.

Brooke can only move if someone carries her, and Ginger has already had surgery for a hernia from lifting the growing girls. The Akers have had an insurmountable amount of medical bills that are not always covered by insurance. Even though their house is not wheelchair accessible or large enough for the amount of medical equipment needed for the girls, they cannot afford to move. In this episode of Extreme Makeover, Ty and the team travel to Southern Ohio to give the Akers an accessible home for their children.

Custom cabinetry by KraftMaid was built into many rooms in the Akers new home, including the laundry room where the warm Cinnamon stain was chosen for the cherry wood cabinets. Satina glass inserts accented the doors which were completed Stainless Steel Bar pulls. Separate master bathroom areas provide spacious areas for the Akers with Canvas finished maple cabinets in her bath, and the Peppercorn stain on the cherry wood work in his bath. The cabinetry in both rooms was highlighted by Bistro glass door inserts and Aluminum Half Round Bar pulls pulling it all together.

The family’s new kitchen was designed using Venicia, KraftMaid’s sleek, Euro-inspired line of custom cabinets. Autumn Cherry Gloss was chosen for the Capri style doors with Aluminum Integrated hardware. The children’s Jack and Jill bathroom was also equipped with Venicia’s Lustra cabinetry in the crisp, white Bianco Gloss and completed with Satin Nickel Tapered Bow pulls.
