Extreme Makeover: Home Edition
It all began with a television producer’s phone call asking KraftMaid to help a deserving family in need of a fresh start. Seasons later, we are proud to remain the exclusive cabinetry provider of ABC’s award-winning program, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.
Episode 22The Kadzis Family
After learning of the difficulties of providing special needs children in China with treatment and therapy, the Kadzis family embarked on several trips abroad to offer assistance. There they met and fell in love with six disabled children that were living in orphanages and had never been afforded any type of treatment or therapy. Their six adopted children came into their home with limited physical and motor abilities, including deafness, blindness and physical deformities. As advocates and mentors for the Children’s Home Society in Tallahassee Florida, George and Barbara Kadzis are educators for other parents of disabled, orphaned children across the globe.
Sadly, George was diagnosed with cancer in 2005 and is battling his second round with the disease which has spread to his brain. His diagnosis has once again taken time and energy away from his desire to modify his family’s home, to better accommodate their special needs. The Kadzis home is cramped, closed off and difficult for their blind daughter Melody to navigate, resulting in many injuries. The home itself has sustained a great deal of water damage by a host of hurricanes and it also has outdated wiring throughout the home. Although their living space is cramped, the Kadzis family is most concerned with creating a home that has a peaceful space where their beloved father can fight and win his second battle with cancer.
The Kadzis’ new home was outfitted for all of their special needs and included custom KraftMaid cabinetry in many rooms. The kitchen was equipped with maple wood cabinetry stained in Biscotti, a creamy, off-white tone and accented with Satin Nickel hardware and Bistro glass inserts. The laundry room was designed with Dove White cabinets completed with Brushed Pewter knobs, while the master bathroom woodwork was stained in Canvas with Matte Nickel Suitcase pulls.
Two other bathrooms in the Kadzis home were designed using Venicia by KraftMaid. These sleek, Euro-style cabinetry selections offer a streamlined, contemporary look with the same quality craftsmanship. The Capri door style was chosen for one bathroom, stained in the cool grey Steel Gloss and accented with Stainless Steel hardware. In the last bathroom, Lucerne doors were finished in Bianco Gloss a sleek white, and embellished with Aluminum pulls.
