Extreme Makeover: Home Edition

It all began with a television producer’s phone call asking KraftMaid to help a deserving family in need of a fresh start. Seasons later, we are proud to remain the exclusive cabinetry provider of ABC’s award-winning program, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

Season 6

Episode 23The Cooper Family

Like so many of his fellow soldiers who served in the first Gulf War, Jeff Cooper came home with more than just medals. He also came home suffering from Gulf War Syndrome - an illness typified by symptoms including immune system disorders. In Jeff’s case, he is suffering from a bevy of symptoms including Multiple Sclerosis. This once vital and vibrant soldier is now confined to a wheelchair and suffering in pain.

Jeff Cooper is a hero to his family, not because of his military service, but for saving his own son’s life. On a fall morning in October of 2006, Jeff’s son Aaron carried a bag of garbage out to the street for pick up when the garbage truck backed over the 11-year-old boy. Jeff’s Army Medic training kept him calm while he performed vital lifesaving procedures on his son until the ambulance arrived. Jeff kept his son alive but was unable to save Aaron’s right arm - it was amputated above the elbow.

While this family of four has suffered many trials and tribulations, they’ve remained upbeat and happy. That’s hard to do living in a dingy, broken down double wide that is a constant challenge to Jeff’s special needs. The vinyl siding is falling off and the roof is missing so many shingles that it is covered with a tarp and bricks. The electrical receptacles are falling out of the walls and there is no solid wall left to screw them back in. And the only accessible bathtub in the house is broken. The Extreme Team travels to North Carolina to give this deserving family the new home of their dreams.

Hickory wood cabinetry in a Natural finish were installed the the Cooper’s new kitchen compliments of KraftMaid. In the laundry room, Birch cabinets were selected, stained in Pewter with Graphite Glaze, and accented by Blackened Pewter door knobs. The spacious master bathroom was outfitted with neutral tones including Birch wood cabinets stained in Muslin and completed with KraftMaid’s own Brushed Copper hardware. The office was designed with Hickory cabinetry in Sunset, a medium brown finish, embellished with Oil Rubbed Bronze knobs and pulls.
