Season 6

Episode 25The McFarland Family

Inspired by a librarian at an early age, Bernard McFarland learned the power of books and the weight of words. Growing up, Bernard had no idea that he was poor. He grew up with a mom and a dad and had a roof over his head, but when he was in the military he came to understand that his life was rich in love but his family lived far below poverty. After a visit back to his old neighborhood, while still serving in the Navy, Bernard McFarland learned that violence and the rate of high school dropouts had grown dramatically. He immediately felt a calling to move back to where he grew up and mentor to the youth in the community and begin sharing his love and passion for books, words and family.

While being a mentor to his community Bernard hasn’t been able to financially care for the up keep of his home. The ceilings in every room of Bernard’s home are peeling and falling down. The pipes are rusting through the walls and leaking. Water is corroding the floors to cause a white film to come up around the rooms. The electrical is very old and they have to use surge protectors to be able to have things plugged in. In addition to the needs of his own home, Bernard is hoping to one day provide the kids in his community with a resource center and library. In this episode, the Extreme Team travels to Indianapolis to makeover the McFarland’s home and build a library for a community in need.

The McFarland’s new home was designed with custom cabinetry by KraftMaid. In the kitchen, laundry area and family room, maple wood cabinetry was selected and finished in Ginger with Sable Glaze, a subtle, golden brown hue. Oil Rubbed Bronze hardware and Ravenna glass inserts accented the new cabinetry in these rooms. The community’s new library was also outfitted with KraftMaid cabinets in the recreation area. The deep brown Peppercorn was chosen to stain the cherry wood cabinets, which were completed with sleek Aluminum Round Bar pulls.
