Extreme Makeover: Home Edition

It all began with a television producer’s phone call asking KraftMaid to help a deserving family in need of a fresh start. Seasons later, we are proud to remain the exclusive cabinetry provider of ABC’s award-winning program, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

Season 6

Episode 9The Nickless Family

Tim Nickless, a loving husband and father to three young boys, was not only a respected nurse, but also a gifted craftsman, mentor and environmentalist. The medical field suited Tim perfectly and he was devoted to his patients and educating other professionals. In 2001, Tim was accidentally stuck with a contaminated needle during an episode with a combative patient. Two years later Tim began feeling ill. He was tested and learned that he had contracted Hepatitis C from the needle stick. Life as they knew it from that point further changed for this family. After a painful 7-year battle, Tim passed away in early 2008.

Tim’s wife Arlene is now on her own with their three boys in their 148-year-old farmhouse. The basement has been flooded twice in the last year and the dining room floor has been slowly sinking into the ground because there is no support. Arlene’s bedroom has no heat and the upstairs stairway is very dangerous. Arlene is sleeping on the couch while the three boys all share one bed. In this episode of Extreme Makeover, the team travels Michigan to bring a fresh start to this family that is desperate for help.

Hickory wood was used to craft the cabinetry in the kitchen, custom-made by KraftMaid. Sunset, a medium brown finish was chosen and accented by Aged Bronze hardware and Bistro glass inserts. The laundry room was outfitted with Cherry cabinets, stained in Vintage Onyx, a rich, black painted finish.

The master bathroom was equipped with maple cabinetry in Natural with Cocoa Highlights. Linen glass inserts and Satin Nickel knobs were used to complete the soft look of this new bathroom. The boys’ bathroom was designed with KraftMaid’s Cognac stained maple cabinets with Matte Nickel Suitcase pulls.
