Extreme Makeover: Home Edition
It all began with a television producer’s phone call asking KraftMaid to help a deserving family in need of a fresh start. Seasons later, we are proud to remain the exclusive cabinetry provider of ABC’s award-winning program, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.
Episode 4The Hampton Family
On the evening of March 29th, 2007, Chris and Nicki Hampton got a knock at their door that forever changed their lives. Nicki’s youngest sister and her husband were in a spiral of abuse, drug addiction, and crime that led to their children being removed from their custody. The Hamptons without a second thought empathically stated, ’’Yes, we will take them.’’
Already with two children of their own, Chris and Nicki tried everything they could to make enough room for everyone in their 700-square-foot house. All three boys share one set of bunk beds in the dining room and all three girls sleep in another set of bunk beds in the old utility closet. The entire family eats together in the living room with the babies in booster seats and everyone else on the floor on a blanket.
Aside from space there are several other major issues with the house. The roof is damaged and needs immediate replacement, which shows as water damage and sagging ceilings in every room. There are numerous electrical issues, leading to blown breakers, smoke and burn marks on the walls. The house was built on top of the septic tank, which constantly has trouble and sewage backs up into the house.
Vintage Canvaswere selected for the family’s new kitchen. Bistro glass inserts and copper knobs and pulls accented the woodwork. KraftMaid’s Vintage Biscotti was chosen for the laundry room as well as the Hamptons master bathroom. The warm, neutral tone of these cabinets were embellished with copper hardware in the laundry area, while Venetian Bronze Rustic knobs were used in the bathroom. Finally, in an upstairs bathroom, the deep, rich Peppercorn stain was selected for the cherry cabinetry, with sleek Stainless Steel Bar pulls completing the room.
