Extreme Makeover: Home Edition
It all began with a television producer’s phone call asking KraftMaid to help a deserving family in need of a fresh start. Seasons later, we are proud to remain the exclusive cabinetry provider of ABC’s award-winning program, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.
Episode 6The Huber Family
In the city of Superior there’s one firefighter that everyone knows: Howard Huber. The city’s mayor honored him with awards for Meritorious Service in 2006 and 2007 after rescuing a 19-year-old boy who had stopped breathing as well as a mother and her two young children trapped in a burning bedroom.
When Howard and and his wife, Jessica were first married, they were excited to buy and move into a small but affordable home. When the company Howard worked for went bankrupt, many workers were laid off, including Howard. He took any work he could find, but the bills piled up fast with a two year old son and another child on the way. The Hubers sold their home and moved into a small and dilapidated old farmhouse in the country. It was all they could afford and Howard thought he could fix it up while he went to school on the weekends to become a firefighter. They were able to fully pay off their debts and Howard was hired full time by the City of Superior Fire Department.
The Hubers started fixing up the home, only to find that most of it was beyond repair. An unstable septic tank and chimney pose a constant potential threat to the Hubers’ lives. There have been numerous times that the family had to live with relatives while their home was being patched up. In the season premier episode, the Extreme Makeover team travels to Wisconsin to build this heroic firefighter a new home!
The Huber’s brand new home was constructed with KraftMaid cabinetry in several rooms. Both the kitchen and laundry rooms were designed with cherry wood cabinets in KraftMaid’s Cinnamon stain, a reddish-brown finish with golden overtones. The dark contrast of Vintage Onyx was utilized for the kitchen island. Stainless Steel hardware and Modern Frosted glass inserts accented the woodwork. A multi-purpose room with workshop, exercise and play areas for the whole family, was built with maple cabinets in KraftMaid’s Dove White, completed with Stainless Steel Bar pulls.
