Extreme Makeover: Home Edition
It all began with a television producer’s phone call asking KraftMaid to help a deserving family in need of a fresh start. Seasons later, we are proud to remain the exclusive cabinetry provider of ABC’s award-winning program, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.
Episode 5Keefer Family
Steve Keefer has always had a great relationship with all of his sons, wanting only the best in life for them. Most fathers feel the same. But it’s the rare dad who would step up as Steve has for his son Brian, putting his life on hold to help fulfill his son’s dreams.
Twelve days before his twenty-first birthday, Brian Keefer (an all-around college athlete and president of his college’s gymnastics team) suffered a drastic gymnastics injury that paralyzed him from the neck down. Brian was a sophomore at Lock Haven University heading into his junior year. With this injury, Brian needed 24-hour care. So Steve gave up his job to move onto the college campus with Brian as his primary care aide, helping to feed, dress and bathe him, and take him to class.
The prognosis for a full recovery for most people with his injury is poor. But with his Dad’s help, Brian is thriving at school, has a positive attitude, and is disciplined with his physical therapy. His medical team is optimistic.
At his family home, Brian is limited to only a few downstairs rooms of the house. With all his equipment, his makeshift room leaves him feeling trapped. And the best therapy for Brian is aqua-therapy, and although the home has an outdoor pool that Steve built for the boys when they were younger, it is not accessible to Brian in his wheelchair, and the temperature cannot be properly regulated for his condition.
So Ty and the team travel to Etters, Pennsylvania to build a “forever home” for Brian that connects to the current family home and includes an indoor aqua-therapy pool. The team also renovates the family home to make more of it accessible. Brian now has both independence at home and the support he needs to continue to heal.
KraftMaid cabinets were installed in both Brian’s home and the main house. In Brian’s home, stylish Avery (AW1) in Rye and Avery (ML1) Maple in Dove White set the tone. In the main house, the kitchen features Lyndale Square - Full (MP1) in Canvas w/ Cocoa Glaze and an island in Lyndale Square - Full (LY1) Antique Chocolate w/ Mocha Glaze. The master bathroom also gets a makeover with Patterson Square (AA4M1) cabinets in Canvas w/ Cocoa Glaze.
