A timeless space with classic charm—from the elegant Putnam Maple doors to the Shortbread island and beyond.
- What was the client’s dream?
- They wanted a new home that blended modern and world-traveled tastes. Plus, they needed enough room to enjoy retirement and host loved ones.
- What’s a major challenge you solved?
- There was a size limitation with the floor plan.
So some of our cabinets had to be custom-sized to create overall symmetry and consistency.
Since there’s no standard cabinet for espresso appliances or oversized hood vents, we sourced custom-sized finished panels that could be assembled on site to achieve a seamless look alongside factory-made cabinetry.
- What’s your favorite thing about this kitchen?
- We love the amount of storage and the overall layout.
There was a lot of attention to detail paid to how our clients actually use their kitchen, and where storage, work, and prep areas should be located.
We also love the integrated dining seating at the island. Because the island is oversized, we added a contrasting countertop strip. It enhances the contemporary look while disguising the seams caused by the available slab size.
Be bold, and don’t be afraid to do something different.
- What’s a tip, trick, or trade secret you’d like to share?
- With such tall ceilings, we used the light rail trim as a divider between upper and lower wall cabinets. We carried that same trim into the hood vent design for consistency, as well as the base and top of all the cabinets. The square trim boards fit a contemporary aesthetic better than a traditional toe kick, quarter round, or crown molding.
- How did KraftMaid make it easy to complete this project?
- KraftMaid allowed cabinet dimension modifications and panel modifications, which helped the overall symmetry tremendously! We were also able to order custom appliance panel fronts from KraftMaid, ensuring the door style and finish matched the factory cabinetry. And their interior storage accessories came pre-installed, which was a great time-saver during installation.
- Any advice for next year’s contestants?
- Be bold, and don’t be afraid to do something different. Don’t let your own design style limit your client’s final project. We often learn and grow by the non-traditional ideas that clients bring to the table.
